S.Korean violist Kim Kyu-ri appointed as associate principal of Gürzenich Orchestra Köln

SEOUL, Nov. 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korean violist Kim Kyu-ri (29) has been appointed as the associate principal within the "Gürzenich Orchester Köln" in Germany, according to the Kumho Cultural Foundation on Thursday. 

On Nov. 22, Kim passed the audition to be appointed as an associate principal for the viola group and is scheduled to begin her career in the orchestra in March 2022.

Founded in 1827, the Gürzenich Orchestra is a prestigious German orchestra based in the city of Cologne.

Kim graduated from Hochshule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin after attending Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School, and Seoul National University. The violist is currently attending the Lübeck Academy of Music School.

The 29-year-old violist made her debut at the "Kumho Prodigy" concert in 2006 and gained further recognition after winning first place at the Dong-A Music Competition in 2014. Kim previously won first place at the International Johannes Brahms Competition and the Beethoven's Hradec International Music competition.

Flutist Cho Sung-hyun served as the head of the flute members of the Gürzenich Orchestra, and now cellist Bae Jee-hye (associate principal) and Lee Hae-jin (second violin) work as members of the orchestra.
