SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- As super band BTS has earned the grandest trophy at the 2021 AMAs (American Music Awards) beating such amazing pop stars, the world’s attention has swayed to the Grammy Awards.

The Grammy Award is the one trophy of America’s big 3 music awards that BTS has yet never held up.

This year the band became the first Asian singer to be honored with the AMAs’ “Artist Of The Year” Award and the people are paying keen interest in whether they will make it to the Grammy Awards as well and achieve a “Grand Slam” within the pop music industry.

The American Recording Academy will present the list of nominees for “The 64th Grammy Awards” at 2 a.m. on the 24th (KST, 9 a.m. on the 23rd by WST), according to the pop music industry Tuesday.

The list was voted by the Academy’s members consisting of music experts such as singers, producers, recording engineers and critics.

The first vote was finished on Nov. 5th and the final vote will be in December.

Whether the band will win a Grammys’ trophy is one of the hottest issues within the music industry.

Although the band was first time nominated for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance during the last 63rd ceremony as a K-pop singer, they did not receive the trophy.

Looking back on the band’s 2021 accomplishments, there are predictions that they may be nominated for and possibly win a Grammy trophy this time.

Their English single “Butter” released in May was a 1st place clincher on Billboard Main Singles Chart “Hot 100” for 10 weeks in total. Including “Butter,” there have only been 40 songs that have grabbed 1st rank for over 10 weeks in Billboard’s history.

The popularity of their “My Universe, a collaborated song with world band Cold Play, is quite noteworthy as well.

“Even to those who have considered ‘Dynamite’’s success as just a peculiar incident, BTS’ popularity has become a natural phenomena or further, something universal,” said Kim Do-heon pop music critic.

Especially, there are suggestions that the AMAs awards which happened two days before the announcing of the Grammy Awards’ nominees will give a positive impact to the band.

Beating world-class stunners such as Ariana Grande, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift and The Weekend, the band won a triple-crown including the grandest trophy at the AMAs. This feat shows that the band’s status and position have surely changed.

“The AMAs moves on swiftly like ‘Litmus Paper.’ This is a beginning. A first step towards the final goal, Grammy,” said Kim Hun-shik pop music critic.

“As they have been awarded with the most honorable prize at the AMAs, the possibilities for them to be nominated for and even clinch major trophies have become higher. They may be nominated for about three trophies and receive at least one,” predicted the critic.

“The award ceremonies almost instantly respond to one another about the movements and trends in an era. The AMAs’ trophy for the “Artist Of The Year” Award would make a good synergy effect,” said Kim Yoon-ha pop music critic.

Also the critic sees higher possibilities of winning a trophy form the four grand prizes, the General Fields compared to last year.

“From BTS’ golden days, a lot can be expected,” said the critic.

Yet, Grammys’ exceptionally ‘meticulous’ standards may act as a blocking stone.

As most of the Academy’s members are conventional groups in the mainstream of the American music, it is well-known that the Grammys usually don’t give high scores for “new choices.” Also, it is known that members from Asian members account for less than 10%.

For these reasons, even globally famous pop stars have failed to win a Grammy for several times.

However, starting from this year, they will be choosing nominees through a vote from all the Recording Academy’s members so there are opinions saying that the Grammys will have to put BTS’ mega-power into evaluation as well.

“As the Recording Academy is such a conventional group, we thought that BTS will have to wait about an year to be awarded a trophy from them,” said Kim Jee-woon chief researcher of Gaon Chart. Like the other critics, the researcher also sees high possibilities of BTS winning a Grammy Awards for this year.

The 64th Grammy Awards will take place on Jan. 31 in 2022 (Feb. 1 according to KST).
