GONGJU, Jan. 8 (Yonhap) – Many events to mark King Muryeong(462~523), who led Baekje, will be held in Gongju South Chungcheong Province this year.

Gongju-si has explained on Jan. 8 that they will hold an event where they change the direction of the King Muryeong’s statue every Saturday at 2 p.m. from this month to provide attractions for the visitors who seek Gongsanseong Fortress.

The statue of King Muryeong, which was installed in Yeonmun Square in front of Geumseoru, Gongsanseong, in September, 2021, is 9.5m high and embodies the figure of King Muryeong sending an envoy to Liang Dynasty in China in 521 to announce that Baekje knocked down Goguryeo several times and regained its power once more.

It is designed so that the statue can rotate 360 degrees by installing a driving unit inside the pedestal.

The memorial service for King Muryeong's death will be held on June. 5 after exhaustive examination, and the birth ceremony will also be held on June. 29, which is the birth date.

The 68th Baekje Cultural Festival will be held at the end of September as a festival that aggregates contents related to King Muryeong.

Kim Jeong-sub, the mayor of Gongju, said, "King Muryeong is Baekje's greatest monarch and the pride of our city itself," adding, "We will do our best to become a cultural capital in the central region by keeping King Muryeong's envoy, which shows Baekje regaining its power once more, in mind for today's development."
