SEOUL, May 8 (Yonhap) -- With yellow lights on the merry-go-round in an abandoned amusement park and colorful fireworks exploding in the dark blue sky, the reality turns into a fantasy with the rich orchestral melody flow.

Netflix's new series, “The Sound of Magic (Annarasumanara)”, released on the 6th, is a fantasy music drama based on the original webtoon “Annarasumanara” by Ha Il-kwon.

“The Sound of Magic” shows the beautiful life after a magician called “Lee Eul (Ji Chang-wook)” appears in front of a girl named Yoon Ah-yi (Choi Sung-eun) who lost her dream, and a boy named Na Il-deung (Hwang in-youp) who is forced to dream.

When Lee Eul asks, “Do you believe in magic?”, Ah-yi and Il-deung looks into each other’s inner thoughts. Bit by bit, the Ah-yi who was living in utter poverty, and Il-deung who lost his dream as he lived as his parents told him to, begins to find for the magical world.

While the original work created a visually contrasting effect by expressing the dark reality with achromatic colors and the magical world with color, the drama creates an atmosphere as if in a fairy tale by changing scenes with magic, music, and choreography.

When the drama production was confirmed for Annarasumanara, it drew attention on how it would be able to implement the original webtoon, which was evaluated as a “fantastic drawing”.

Director Kim Seong-yoon, who was in charge of directing, and writer Ha agreed that splendid visuals and music should be included to bring out the atmosphere of the original from the first place. With this, it is expected that the finished drama will be meeting the expectations of the fans who loved the original work. Writer Ha also expressed satisfaction with the work, saying, "Director Kim made my imagination a reality."

The abandoned amusement park where Lee Eul lives, creates a dreamy atmosphere with bright colors including red roses, green leaves, yellow light bulbs in the overall dark lighting, and the chessboard patterns of the floor, lights pouring through the arched windows, along with the curtains hanging all over the place creates an eerie yet mysterious feeling.

Creative ways, such as a shadow being used to express Lee Eul stabbing a balloon with the tip of a sharp knife, using a paper plane to show a scene traveling back to the past, soap bubbles floating in the air, and white snow slow fluttering, is used to show the magical atmosphere.

Additionally, the scene in which Il-deung sings her fluttering emotions towards Ah-yi is shown with a green field and a blue sky as the background, while the atmosphere is reversed whenever the song comes out. This allows them to maximize the differentiation of the reality and the fantasy.

As there are people who do not enjoy the actors singing and dancing in a movie or a drama like a musical, scenes of these are limited to only when it is necessary. In some episodes, there are only one or two scenes of the actors singing.

Apart from the drama, the music also has a high level, where it conveys the emotions of the characters clearly. However, there may also be a sense of rejection in the song during the development of the story.

Ji Chang-wook, Choi Sung-eun and Hwang In-youp successfully acted out the characters with strong personalities.

Ji Chang-wook portrayed Lee Eul, a magician who doesn’t want to be an adult. While he is mysterious and innocent, he also has an eerie side. Choi Sung-eun, portrays a grown-up girl who is tired from the reality of being so poor that she has to worry for a day’s meal, while Hwang In-youp revived the image of a young boy who comes from a wealthy family and has a cold heart. However, he also shows the spark of the first love.

The responses to the story of asking teenage children about their dreams and asking viewers abstract questions about what kind of adult they want to become are mixed.

Among the Netflix series, where there are high levels of violence and sexuality, this story focuses on awakening children as they show the concerns about the future of teenagers, and a situation in which they are extremely poor to secretly eat the food left by convenience store customers. There are also reactions that says that being this poor makes them hard to empathize.
