Squid Game to be hosted in real life as part of hotel marketing strategy

GANGNEUNG, Oct. 12 (Yonhap) -- As Netflix's hit Korean series "Squid Game" is evoking a global syndrome, various organizations are aiming to use the survival drama as a marketing strategy.

The St. John's Hotel, located in Gangneung, recently announced that it will hold a "Squid Game" themed special event with an actual prize money of five million won.

The special event will take place on Oct. 24 and after receiving applications, the participants will be gathered at an outdoor pine forest near the hotel.

Ahead of the game, each participant will be sent an invitation with details on the time and place. 

Unlike the six children's games portrayed in the actual series, the hotel will host four games in total and will eliminate several participants who have lost after each game.

Participants who do not participate in the game after applying will be eliminated as well as those who do not follow the guidance of the staffs.

The first round will begin with the "Red Light, Green Light" game, followed by tug of war, a "dalgona" or sugar honeycomb game, and lastly a traditional Korean game using folded paper tiles.

The last standing winner at the end of all four games will be given a prize money of five million won.

The Front Man's face will be revealed after all the games are over.

"Whether they are guests or non-guests of the hotel, everyone is qualified to participate in the game," an official from the St. John's Hotel said on Tuesday.

In addition, a training center in Gangneung is also actively using the "Squid Game" craze for marketing. For example, a large squid is drawn in the yard so that children and other guests can play the game.

Gangneung city is also planning other "Squid Game" themed promotional materials.
