SEOUL, Apr. 12 (Yonhap) – As the parties have discussed a need for swift review of a bill allowing K-pop superband BTS to substitute their mandatory military service for other public service, there has been great interests on the decision of HYBE, which has been entrusted issues related to the military duty by the members.

The issue of BTS’ military service exemption act has been re-emerged as a “hot potato” since the press conference held during the group’s Las Vegas concert.

Lee Jin-hyung, the HYBE CCO said, “The policy on military service keeps changing for the past few years and it’s true that the BTS members are having a hard time because it’s difficult for them to predict the time of their enlistment,” adding, “Since it’s difficult for them to make plans, we will try to make a decision beneficial to both members and the society.”

The CCO also mentioned, “The artists already entrusted issues related to their military duty to the company,” adding, “We hope the discussion regarding military duty could be settled by the National Assembly this time.”

It shows a significant difference from earlier positions of the company, which has only presented answers cautiously, such as “The members will accept the call of duty when the nation calls them” or “Nothing has been decided yet.”

According to the current law, BTS’ eldest member Jin, born in 1992, has postponed his military service until the end of this year under the direction of the minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

If the members do not get exempted, Jin will have to halt his schedules of the group and enlist in the military at the end of this year.

If each of the members joins the military in order based on their age, the performances of BTS as a whole will be postponed until at least 6 to 7 years from now.

Although some suggest all members to serve at the same time to cut hiatus for the band, it may not be an easy decision to make as there should be an agreement of all members and the age gap between them reaches 5 years to the largest extent.
