SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- KBS 2TV's new drama "Youth of May," which captures the emotions of the 1980s, started with a 4% viewership.

According to Nielsen Korea, a ratings agency, the first episode of the drama, which aired at 9:30 p.m. the previous day, recorded a 4.4%-4.9% rating.

In the first episode, the fateful meeting between Myung-hee (Go Min-si) and Hee-tae (Lee Do-hyun), who went on a blind date at the request of Soo-ryeon, marked the beginning of the melodrama.

"Youth of May" introduced a fresh take on the characteristics of the melodrama, which may seem somewhat old-fashioned, by properly reviving retro touches with costumes and props embodied in the 1980s.

In the background of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, some raised concerns about history distortion, but in the first broadcast, they focused on the figures living their daily lives without directly mentioning the incident.

There were also favorable reviews for the warm atmosphere, which was unique to the drama. Some viewers welcomed the emergence of a new melodrama that gives a sense of pureness, since many crime or fantasy dramas have recently become the mainstream.

Some said that the acting skills of so-called "rising stars" born in the 90s, including Lee Do-hyun, Go Min-si, Lee Sang-Yi and Keum Sae-rok, were also stable.

"Youth of May" was the first new drama to start within the Monday-Tuesday drama market.

Next week, however, as tvN's drama "Doom at Your Service" starring Park Bo-young and Seo In-guk starts broadcasting, the two dramas is expected to compete fiercely with each other.
