Recipient of Gwangju Prize for Human Rights

Dr. Cynthia Maung of Myanmar speaks during a press conference in the southwestern city of Gwangju on May 17, 2022. The May 18 Memorial Foundation has named the human rights activist the winner of the 2022 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights that commemorates the 1980 pro-democracy uprising in the South Korean city, in which hundreds of citizens were killed during their protests against the military junta of Chun Doo-hwan. Maung has run the Mae Tao Clinic, known locally as the Student Clinic, in Mae Sot, Thailand, near the Myanmar border, which has been providing basic health care services for internally displaced persons and migrant workers for three decades.
